Week one:

“I’m Agent Annalee Barton, I’ve been assigned as your partner for the following missions-” she starts off, her tone polite and professional as she offers a faux smile. The smile diminishing as he cuts her off, turning to fully face her.

“Agent David Lauther…Though I’m sure Fury already told me everything about you I need to know. I’m sure he did the same for you, so lets get this over with” David returns with a deadpan tone and a nod.

Annalee narrows her eyes at him, before walking past him with a slight chuckle, a sarcastic grin on her lips. “I’m not gonna deal with your attitude if I’m going to be stuck with you for all this time” she glances over her shoulders before entering S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters and leaving him in the dust.

Week two:

“You’re an idiot!” she exclaims, rage in her voice, her eyes like daggers aiming at him as she grabs her bag from her locker. It’s been the first time they were sent out together, both still uneasy and frigid towards each other. Slamming the door shut she turns on him “How you ever were hired is beyond my imagination because you don’t know your ass from your elbow”.

David chuckles, laugh lines forming around the corners of his lips and growing towards his cheeks. “We did what we we’re told to do, you’re just pissed that I didn’t do it the way you told me too” he answers, his tone calm. He’s testing the blondes limits, pushing her buttons so that she will snap at him. Possibly get him off of this partnership and to another.

The other agent doesn’t give into him though, and in a flash of golden hair she is walking down the hall. Away from his sight and not giving into his childish ways.

Week Three:

David is sitting back, watching a sparring match between two newbie agents, a bottle of water in his hand and blue hues glued on the fight. He hears the door open and the sound of sneakers against the floor, the steps not taking long to reach him as he looks over his shoulder watching as Annalee walks in front of him. “Hey shortstuff, I was wondering when you would show up” he greets, his smile taunting.

Arms cross loosely over her middle this time, not paying attention to his attitude, or facial expression. No, she knows what he’s doing by now, waiting to see if she’ll loose her cool and snap on him. Fueling the fire that she needs to keep from giving into him each time she sees that ridiculous smile on his face. This time she leans forward, hands gripping the back of his chair and making it stand back on four legs again. Hostile green eyes meeting with a meddling blue as she practically pins him in place. “I’m sick of this bullshit you are pulling, Agent, I don’t care who you are and whether you like it or not. We’re partners, and by the looks of it it’s going to be that way for a while. So you can either suck it up and stop being such a damn tool or you can do what you’re supposed to and have my back like I have yours”. She backs up, standing straight up and fixing her shirt before glancing back down at his shocked face “I expect to see you at training”. She finishes with that, pivoting on her heel and walking back out the way she came.

Week Four:

The next week, after countless hours of training and peaceful small talk David is the one to break the silence, swallowing back his pride for the moment. “I want to apologize, what you said the other day was right, and it took you doing that for me to realize that…well…you aren’t as bad as I thought you were going to be I guess, you didn’t deserve the way I was treating you” he glances over at her with an momentarily awkward stare, before hearing her take in a deep breath.

“It’s fine” is all she answers with, Annalee having never been comfortable with sharing her feelings or listening to others. Even if it meant receiving an apology she brings her hand into her hair to rake her sun streaked locks with her fingers. Separating the curls that had attempted entanglement before nodding her head “It is, but until you can prove it words are just words ya’know”. Her own words surprise her before she crosses her arms and turns to walk away. Whether or not she liked to admit it, David’s words were probably the first ‘I’m sorry’ she’d ever heard aside from her parents.

The only thing Annalee is better at than archery is parkour & free running. While her parents were busy with work and she was stuck at boarding school or with her current ‘nanny’ she spent any free time that she had on her hands training herself. How she got interested in it is the funny part, her parents never mentioned it to her, she had seen it in a movie (that she coincidentally wasn’t supposed to be watching). After seeing what it was she instantly wanted to learn, she was seven at the time and was always sneaking away from whoever she was left with. Showing up at dusk covered in scrapes in bruises looking like she’d just come back from war, and would receive a glare from the woman who took care of her at the time. Though the young blonde never let up to the current babysitter where she was going off to she never got more than a scolding seeing punishments never worked when you had a child small enough to sneak out anywhere.

By the time she was twelve and in school she was still training even though she had already mastered the most common parts. Whenever the DA would go to sleep Annalee would sneak out of the window and keep watch on the light to the DA’s room, making sure to get in before it went on. Her personal training went on for years without anyone knowing, until her mother finally saw the giant bruise that was present on Annalee’s hip after falling from the staircase railing on the second floor of her dorm. Immediately the red head wanted answers, knowing that it wasn’t from ‘bumping into the counter in the cafeteria’ by the look of it. Natasha was the first to know, and the first to actually witness Annalee do this. Of course the Russian lost her mind when she saw her daughter gap jumping herself from one rooftop to another, rolling with each landing each with a further distance before flipping onto the last, sneakers skidding up dust.  Annalee just smiled while catching her breathe with a laugh at her mothers shocked face and replying “I guess I should’ve started small huh?”. Before being given a serious lecture by Natasha about how dangerous and reckless that it was and how easy it would be for her to fall.

Annalee of course didn’t listen, and continued her ‘hobby’ even after her mothers lecture, and sat through her fathers when he found out about her dangerous activity as well. To this day she still continues to do both parkour and free running whenever she isn’t busy, and incorporates it within her missions or lesser known activities outside of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“I know it wasn’t my fault, Annalee but I forgot my daughter.” she sighs and walks over to her, brushing back a piece of her hair. “Edith for his mother, that’s sweet. I’m shocked I didn’t make him let me give you an all Russian name.” she laughs and then walks towards her office, motioning for Annalee to follow her. “Are…” she doesn’t know how to phrase her question and it’s not fair to ask her. “Are we married? Your dad and I?” she kind of rushes it, feeling her stomach sink that she can’t remember.

“You didn’t do it willingly…I knew you didn’t want to forget me..”Annalee’s voice was quiet for a moment compared to her previous tone. Of course it had been hard, and it had hurt to hear of her mothers memory loss, something that Annalee hadn’t expected to hear. The hardest part was not knowing when she would remember, or if she would. “Actually…You got a pretty solid hit for the Russian part..Anna of Russia…Anna Romanova Empress and Autocrat of all the Russians…no matter how crazy she was…honestly the woman was off her rocker with power” a small smile appeared on Annalee’s lips, repeating the explanation she had heard long ago from her mother. “I never got why he wanted to add ‘lee’ to it, he probably doesn’t remember either..”. At the question Annalee pauses once more “Well..Wouldn’t you rather ask him?” she didn’t want to overwhelm her mother with news.

A!U: When Annalee is sent on a mission that turns out to be a trap she is declared missing after a week of no communications. S.H.I.E.L.D sends out a rescue team but their efforts are in vain when they find there are no traceable signs of her kidnappers, but her blood is found at the scene. The search continues for a month, and then slowly begins to die out. Aside from the closest people to her no one believes it’s possible that she’s still alive, especially with no ransom or bargain from her kidnappers. Her parents still continue their search for hear, tracking down any possible lead they can until it dies into nothing like the rest. Even some of their closest and most powerful allies and friends are unable to help them find their lost daughter. Very few people are kept up on the search, including Peter, because even if Natasha or Clint didn’t contact him he found some way to contact them. Peter being left wit no trace of his girlfriend searches through the crime gossip via Spider Man’s power. Giving crooks the chance to give up any possible information that already he knows they won’t have but still tries. After the three month mark passes is when the others begin to lose hope, Natasha buries herself in missions inside and outside of S.H.I.E.L.D, Clint does the same while continuing his searches, sometimes with Natasha and sometimes without.

It’s not until the fourth months that Annalee is found, not by S.H.I.E.L.D or her parents, or Peter, but by the NYPD when there is a call from a anonymous caller that there is a fight happening outside of their apartment between a man and a woman. By the time the first cop car arrives the man is gone, leaving a disheveled and malnourished female at the scene who refused to go with the police. Using the last of her efforts to get them to listen long enough to call Clint and have him explain everything. The weary movements her body makes barely able to hold her up after the fight. Clint is at the scene faster than it would be thought possible and defending his daughter. One of the local bystanders is the one to provide the police sketch and while this is happening Clint is sly enough to get his daughter away without further attention.

Within the hours following Natasha returns to S.H.I.E.L.D to be reunited by her daughter, Clint not having left her side for nearly the entire time. When the tests were run or when they attempted to get her to eat, but the sight of food made her sick. It’s Clint though who calls Peter when Annalee begins to look a little less like death, and it’s Steve who accompanies his son onto SHIELD base. Though when he gets there Annalee is with the doctor once more, leaving Clint and Natasha to greet him with the news that yes, she is alive. The doctor doesn’t allow anyone in the rest of the night even after Natasha’s deadly glare because he doubts she’ll be awake. No one leaves though, Clint sits right next to the door, Natasha paces for awhile, Steve talks for awhile but eventually silences himself out, Peter is stuck in the middle of it all just glad to hear the word alive.

She isn’t let out for a few weeks, until around a month when her health seems it’s closest to what good would be since they last saw her. Annalee isn’t the same though, she’s silent, nervous, jumpy, nightmares haunt her so she barely sleeps. The secrets she heard while in captivity stay locked behind her lips even when she is questioned by SHIELD. There are no more answers needed because all but one is dead that held her captive, and the last got away and she doubted she would ever see the coward again. She had escaped to America again from the UK, and he had followed but never ad the ability to capture her and keep her. No one questions her when she hands in her S.H.I.E.L.D badge and walks out of the Directors office without a further word. Her green eyes a shade darker as she exists out into the light of the real world once more.

The month following this she stays with her parents, and when she’s not with them she finds her safety in Stark tower. Where Tony spends the time that Peter is at School showing her what he’s got coming up for the suit, appreciating the silence that accompanies her observation aside from a question or comment, a rare laugh escaping her lips occasionally.

Sometimes it’s Steve who sits with her and they talk about the war, and the changes he made and the people he saved, sometimes the people he lost. Annalee tells him how Phil used to tell her similar stories when she was a kid, and adds how aside from her parents he was her hero growing up. Then when Peter gets home she tends to stay by his side, just as he does hers unless he’s needed to save the city again. Even then she covers for him, making sure his parents don’t find out where he is. They stay by each others side whenever possible though, because she feels safe around him, and he wants to keep her as safe as he can now that he’s lost her once. There are times where she falls asleep there, sometimes watching him work on something for the suit or sometimes when they are watching T.V. Tony and Steve never say anything, Peter usually falls asleep right along with her, but every time she still wakes up with the nightmares. Peter pretends he doesn’t notice for awhile, but then he begins questioning, only to be denied answers from her.

Tony tells him to give her space and Steve tells him him the same thing without hesitation. That’s what he does, until she begins to pull away from him completely, rarely showing up and when she does the nightmares are worse and even he is stirred awake when she wakes up with a jump. Questions following questions as he wants to help her, but she want’s to push it away. The fights start this way, and soon enough she comes over once a week, and that’s when the warning signs start to show. He knows she’s planning to leave, by the way she acts, the same characteristics as when she would leave on missions.

It’s the night she stops by the tower looking the day she did when she turned her badge in. A dangerous green tint to her eyes that makes Peter wonder if the girl who was so vulnerable weeks before sleeping by his side is there. She tries to let him down gently but it ends with an argument,  the green spark in her eye dying into the scared girl he’s been accompanied by these past few weeks. When she tries to walk away he won’t let her, he would never lay his hands on her, but the web shooter connected to his wrists sends out enough length to pull her to him again. Where silence over laps the two for a moment before Annalee’s eyes are locking with his, Green against blue in a match for answers.

Was she leaving?

-

Could she stay?

“I remember everything” is what she whispers, a shaky tone cutting off her words to a barely audible tone while she leans closer to him. Peter looks at her in silence, because after all the times she denied him that one answer she was denying herself it as well. In that moment they can both tell that she’s not going anywhere and he won’t let her go anywhere, and both of them find that’s exactly what they need after watching each other suffer at their worst from this attack.

A!U: Peter and Annalee have known each other since birth and this is one of their first missions which nearly goes horribly wrong… Especially since they weren’t supposed to do it… And he may have had to dress up as a ballet dancing Nutcracker…

 A fatal flaw.
Peter knew that this was their mission. He knew that his girlfriend was getting hurt. She was trained for that kind of stuff. Came with the contract. Their mission was to infiltrate a corrupt town’s city hall and detain the Mayor - a fraudulent CIA operative attempting to tap into the city’s secret product, adamantium, to sell to the enemy. So when Annalee gets caught and is dragged out to be abused in front of all the citizens to set an example, he can no longer sit back and watch. Even after the hours of preparing, he blows cover, not even slipping on his mask. After beating a couple of cronies, a new wave emerges. Peter makes the mistake of looking over at Annalee who hides her anger beneath her eyes. He realises she is furious beneath that steel facade. Taking one more painful look at her hidden disappointment, Peter figures he can do some good for Annalee as he sprints out of the place, dragging a trail of minions behind him.
Peter’s hamartia: He will always put loved ones before anything, no matter the cost.

I hated having to stay with SHIELD agents when I was a child, they always bothered me.
